Surah Hud Ayat 116-117 Translation Tafseer

Para 12 - وَ مَا مِنْ دَآبَّةٍ

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ

11.116-117

فَلَوْ لَا كَانَ مِنَ الْقُرُوْنِ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ اُولُوْا بَقِیَّةٍ یَّنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْفَسَادِ فِی الْاَرْضِ اِلَّا قَلِیْلًا مِّمَّنْ اَنْجَیْنَا مِنْهُمْۚ-وَ اتَّبَعَ الَّذِیْنَ ظَلَمُوْا مَاۤ اُتْرِفُوْا فِیْهِ وَ كَانُوْا مُجْرِمِیْنَ(116) وَ مَا كَانَ رَبُّكَ لِیُهْلِكَ الْقُرٰى بِظُلْمٍ وَّ اَهْلُهَا مُصْلِحُوْنَ(117)

Kanz-ul-Irfan

So why were there not, from the civilizations before you, people of excellence forbidding discord in the earth except a few from those whom We saved among them? And the oppressors pursued the luxury they were given, and they were transgressors.[1] And it does not befit your Lord that He destroys towns without reason while its inhabitants are righteous.

Commentary

Here, ’اُولُوۡا بَقِیَّۃٍ‘ refers to rightly guided scholars. The misguidance of previous nations was caused by the absence of rightly guided scholars among them. Had they been present, misguidance would not have spread in those communities the way it did. The wider public was guilty of evil acts while the scholars were guilty of failing to condemn the wrongdoers.
